Why Resumes Don’t Matter!

By Marilyne Woodsmall – www.ScienceOfIdiots.com and author of “Personality Language”

In these challenging economic times, focusing on sales is not the only way to get ahead. One of the areas that some business people forget to consider has to do with the realm of hiring and personnel selection. In light of the fact that so many companies are downsizing and laying workers off at the present time, it is all the more critical that when you do hire someone, that you hire right the first time. The best predictor of future behavior is past history. It is important to realize that it is not what a person says that he or she will do that matters. Rather, it is what the person has done in the past in similar situations (as the job for which he or she is applying) that matters.

Non-behaviorally based interviews do little to predict future job performance. I can’t stress this enough. Conducting behaviorally based interviews is the key to successful hiring. People Patterns™ are highly effective in the process of personnel selection and hiring because they enable an employer to filter out and to match the right person or people to the right job. The hiring is based on solid criteria behavioral rather than on fluff or irrelevant information when it comes to hiring right.

This means hiring the right person for the appropriate job that fits his or her particular skills and People Patterns™. If you ask most employers how they hire people, they will say that their hiring is based on resumes and on interviews. So from the get go, the most effective filtering process is not even considered. There are several reasons why traditional hiring practices don’t work.

First, resumes do not reveal a clear picture of the job candidate since resumes simply summarize job history, tasks performed and perceived skills. Most individuals are not aware of their true competencies to execute a given task.

Second, many individuals out there have become quite skilled at interviewing well. On the surface, they may appear to be charming and articulate. These traits do not reflect behavioral patterns connected to the success or failure of executing a particular task. The latter is a critical piece of the puzzle.

Third, an interviewee’s “espoused theories of action” have nothing to do with what he or she actually does. Besides, what people think or say about their skills or why they want to work is not necessarily credible. When interviewed for a job, a person will often tell the interviewer what he or she thinks that the interviewer wants to hear.

The bottom line is that People Patterns™ will help you to hire right the first time. People Patterns™ will help you, thus, to avoid having to let go of someone and to have to go through the hiring process once again because you didn’t hire right the first time. Furthermore, your hiring right the first time will make a huge difference in your bottom line and in your overall productivity. Over time, I will delve into how each of the People Patterns™ that make up Personality Language™ will help you to refine and to improve upon your hiring process, and in turn, your bottom line.

For those of you that know the answer, it is easy and for those of you that do not, you really need to pay attention here.

It is simple. The answer is just two words, Social Media…

Because of Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites out there, good news and bad news is going to not only travel fast, but in volumes and with ease like has never been seen before other than perhaps when our grandparents lived in small towns and everyone knew what was going on almost immediately.

With the advent of mobile devices having instant access to the Internet, potential customers and customers alike will be able to instantly find out if you are worth spending money on. And if you suck at customer service, you will not survive period.

Those businesses that do have great customer service, will thrive and wipe out their competition in a relatively short period of time as their competition dies on the vine wondering what the hell happened to all of their customers.

This is especially true for Brick and Mortar companies. And for those those that still don’t have a decent Website or a Social Media game plan, they are going to be history in short order.

While it is true that you may end up facing some undo pressure from the customer, who let’s all just say it out loud, is an Asshole from Hell when they go on a rant, most smart customers will recognize them for what they are and they will be ostracized and their opinions will not be held in high regard.

So, if you have not gotten off your duff and gotten your Social Media program together, then you really need to get your act together and quickly and beef up your customer service. Because good, bad, or indifferent, news really is going to travel like lightning and you need to keep an handle on what is being said about you and your company and respond to it and fast.

But the best defense is truly a good offense and that is simply treat your customers well! If you have not seen this yet, here is a 5 minute introduction to Twitter.

Tim Ferriss And The 4- Hour Body. How It Can Teach You To Succeed In Business and in Bed…

I will say this right up front. I have been a big fan of Tim’s ever since he came out with his first best selling book “The 4 Hour Workweek”. After reading it all in one day, it inspired me to change my business focus forever and has lead me to some interesting twists in my life. Oh yea, it has also made me money.

If you have not read it, go to the library or better yet, go online and buy the latest version now.

To paraphrase and give you the Cliff Note’s version, he basically turns upside down most of the popularly accepted wisdom about work and starting and running your own business. And he shows you how to drastically increase your productivity and hence income while working a whole lot less.

Why Butter And Ribeyes Are Good And Orange Juice Is Bad

The 4-Hour Body does the same for your body and getting in shape. He blows way 90% of the conventional wisdom and proves why it is wrong. Things like why “not” eating butter is unhealthy and why you should, to eating way more protein like Ribeyes and why it is good for you and why the food Pyramid that is widely accepted will more than likely make you fat and unhealthy. Plus, how a few inexpensive supplements can stop Diabetes and High Cholesterol in their tracks and why if you do have high Cholesterol you want to stay away from Orange Juice.

Then you have to throw in how working out as little as 4 hours a month doing the right type of exercise can in fact make you healthier than if you worked out an hour a day, 5 days a week.

And that is just for starters. You also have to throw in there how to obtain a 15 minute female orgasm. Now the last one should be common knowledge but sadly, it apparently is not.

Tim covers a lot of ground in his latest book.

Which brings me up to how “The 4- Hour Body” and Tim Ferriss can help your business.

For my regular readers you already know this, but it is worth repeating. 90% of the accepted knowledge and wisdom that is written about how to succeed in Business in Magazines, Online Courses, and most especially in Colleges is plain and utter junk and worthless. Frankly most of it is just plain Bull Shit really and truly.

Tim points out the same thing about Health and Fitness Magazines, Exercise Courses and even what you hear from most Doctors and then he goes on to explain why and how you can verify this for yourself.

So, just imagine if you could only do about 20% of the work you do now and yet get 90% of the same results or perhaps even 120%? Well not only is it possible, but there are thousands of people already doing it every day.

One of the hardest things to do is to accept that fact that at least 80% of what you know about business is just wrong. Then the other hard thing is to take the new ideas and implement them.

The thing is that your mind is going to rebel at this for the most part. Not only that, everyone around you is going to tell you that you are nuts and give you crap about it too. That is unless of course you find some like minded people to give you some support.

If you are ready to accept the fact that most of what you know is junk and that the faster your get it out of your head, then you are going to like what I have for you in the coming weeks. I am going to start ripping apart the conventional wisdom that is more than likely keeping you from succeeding and being as successful as you should be.

I will be doing some short videos that are going to blow up the common misconceptions about running a profitable business online that you can start using right away.

Enjoy your New Year and get ready to make 2011 your most successful year ever!

Oh, and by the way. I started “The 4-Hour Body” about 10 days ago and the results so far? Lost 8 lbs or fat and gained 8 lbs of muscle. How is that? Plus I am eating like a horse and tomorrow, I will probably have a big Milkshake, eat some cake, have French Toast slathered in Butter and Syrup plus, eat whatever else my taste buds desire and will still lose weight. My advice is to get the book and find out how I am doing it.

I will leave you with a little known Business success secret. If you want to make more money, get in shape, have more sex and open your mind to doing things differently.

Here is one of my favorite quotes. Tim uses it in his book and it is from William Gibson. If you are a Sci-fi fan, you will recognize it.

The future is already here – it’s just not very evenly distributed.

I am going to show you how to make sure it is distributed to you if you want it.

Cheers,
Andrew Anderson

PS and as you can tell, my editor is on vacation…. Plus if you have any questions, please drop me a line! Also, yes the headline is provocative but it did get your attention.

You Have A Website Great! Let’s Make Some Money

OK, so you have joined the real world an you have a Website. Congratulations!

Now the big trick is to make money from it. The strange things is this is where things usually fall apart for many businesses.

I have seen crappy Websites that make millions and nice Websites that make peanuts. And most people honestly do not have a clue as to why this happens.

I want to destroy a couple of myths here.

Traffic means profits right?

Not even close. You can have all of the traffic in the world and not make squat.

I have to have the perfect looking website to make money. Nope, I have seen some of the most barf ugly sites that make tens’ of thousands a month. Could they be making 10 x that if they were designed right? Sure, but in the meantime they are making money while some of the better looking ones don’t make anything.

It is OK, if I use one of the Free site builders to get started.

Sure it is as long as you don’t expect to make any money. Seriously, they are non-starters these days. There is too much good competition out there.

I spent $5,000 – $150,000 on my site, surely it will do well. LOL

Nope sorry. Unless your Web Designer is a Damn good marketer or you had a really good marketer help you design it, you probably just wasted a bunch of your money.

I have tons of good information on my site so people are bound to buy my products and services.

Umm…nope again and here is why.

First off, when you are putting up you Website, you are facing Technological and Psychological hurdles that most of you may not have faced before.

Getting up a Website usually involves quite a number of things that frankly most people have ever dealt with, so don’t beat yourself up too much. It really is not your fault..

Then to actually design that site so that people give you money involves a whole other level of sales and marketing expertise that most people are not equipped for right off the bat.

OK, so you then start looking for help and you may run into even bigger problems.

There are more Gurus or as I like to call them, Schmooroos out there that are so full of BS that is not funny. If they are so damn good why are they selling anything other than their own services? That is a big question you should ask.

While I do have a very small number of clients that I help with marketing, 90% of what I work on is my own products and services. You see this is because I can make far more money using my own expertise selling my own things than helping other people sell theirs.

I still do it for a couple of reasons. One of which I take on big projects where I know that I can make a huge profit from for myself and them, and I work in a couple of different niches so that I can test out and use my skills and keep them constantly sharp.

But one of the things that I will tell you is this. The best Online marketers do not share their techniques and skills with many people.

This is because if they really have their shit together, they can may 100 times selling their own products and services than they ever can selling someone the how-to-knowledge to someone else.

If they do lend their expertise to a project, they always take a piece of the pie and never ever sell their information outright. Think about it, why in the heck would they?

So, with very, very few exceptions will you every find any Marketing expert out there that is really good that does not have a very substantial business or his or her own other than just selling Marketing stuff.

Makes sense doesn’t it.

Now how do you learn the things you need to succeed online? Well, there are some good sources out there and the first thing is that for a lot of this, if you just use common sense in how you set up your Website you are going to be far ahead of your competition.

Here are some questions to ask yourself.

Can I find what I am selling in just one click?

Is it easy for a potential customer to find out what I am selling and how much it costs?

Do I make it easy for them to pay me?

Do I make it easy to find exactly what they might be looking for and is my information well organized?

Does my site look like something out of the 90′s?

Have I planned out what I want a visitor to do once they get on my site.

Is my site about them or about me?

One of the best exercises I can suggest it to pick up any of the fashion magazines and start flipping through pages. In your mind I want you to ask your self only two questions. Is this page going to give me something or is it trying to take away something i.e. sell me something. Check out the design and the look and feel of the page as well as the headline. You want to set your site up like those pages that are gives. Flip through the pages at the rate of 2 seconds a page and give your opinion. Your subconscious makes up its mind in about 1/3rd of a second. Guess what? Your visitors to your site do the same thing.

Now, yes, I know that my site needs an overhaul and there are at least five things I should change immediately and I shall shortly. But that being said, you can find my information and people that are serious can get in touch with me. I am in a different position that most of you in that I can afford to be really picky about whom I deal with as customers. I don’t need or want a bazillion customers.

But, more than likely you do!

I am going to put together a video of some of the good and not so good sites and post them so that you can see what I am talking about here.

In the meantime, what can you do to make it easier for clients to buy from you on your Website?

Cheers,

Working with some great new clients that I know are going to really benefit from what we are doing with them and once again, a theme popped up as I was logging into my Twitter account.

What popped up is that small things have huge pay offs in a big, big, way. Like your Social Media for instance. I spend about 15 minutes a day on Social Media and yet, I get tons of referrals and business from it. I consider this a small thing with huge pay offs.

One of my Twitter accounts alone could help bring in 5 to 6 figures in the next 12 months.. Small thing, big payoff wouldn’t you say?

That which gets paid attention to on a regular basis expands be it good or bad.

The same goes with your Blog, your marketing, and several dozen other things that are going on with your business right now today. That which gets paid attention to on a regular basis expands be it good or bad.

Consistency and small bite sized chunks are all you need to make a huge difference in your business and in your life.

What little thing can you do starting today with huge pay offs?

Cheers,
Easy Anderson

OK, I have said this before, but if you are going to put up a crappy Website that sucks, at least do it right. Please follow these 5 rules.

1.) Go ahead and have a mostly black or dark Website with white text if you really don’t want to sell anything.

2.) Put some lame ass logo that size of Texas right at the top that does nothing other than tell anyone visiting you care more about you then helping them. Make sure it is not the least bit intriguing or better yet, dollar signs or fast cars right at the top. Or better yet, a big old picture of you.

3.) Make it really hard to find out how much your stuff costs. Make them hunt and hunt or better yet, fill out out a lengthy ill designed form for a quote! Use confusing navigation for extra points.

4.) Have a really busy back ground and smoosh all of your info together and use really hard to read text, like cursive or ones with serifs and don’t use any white space between elements. Use at least 6 colors too.

5.) Last but not least, start right off with a sales page and put pop ups on your page. Got to love both of those in combination. And for Pete’s sake, don’t show or demonstrate that you can solve any of the visitors problems. Go right into the hard pitch to sell your stuff!

Follow 1 or more of these 5 simple rules and your site will certainly suck. The reason I know this is because I have done a few of these. But I read enough Sales books to never commit sin number 1. So, now you know how to make your site suck and if you want to make it not suck, then don’t do any of these.

Cheers,
Andrew “Easy” Anderson

Why You Need To Become Really Good At Being Unreasonable

One of my favorite quotes it this.

“Reasonable men adjust themselves to their environment. Unreasonable men attempt to change their environment to suit themselves. Therefore, all progress is the work of unreasonable men.” – George Bernard Shaw

Another old one of mine is this.

“ I have observed that those that can truly make up their own mind in the face of advice from others to the contrary and even those in league with their original thought and yet own the decision and its outcome, good, bad, or indifferent, are the only ones that end up owning themselves. They are also the only ones that lead truly great lives and in the end, make a difference for everyone, including themselves, detractors and supporters alike.” – Easy Anderson

As with most of my posts, this comes about from a couple of recent conversations that I have had this past week. I know that a point is is important enough to write about when I am reminded of it from several different tangential angles at the same time. So, it happened with this one.

The first time it came up last week was from one of my clients and we were talking about productivity and sales goals. We were discussing sticking with his guns on an ad campaign being done by “experts”. Turns out he was right and they were wrong. He came to his own conclusions in spite of the advice he was getting. Although he would have still could have lived with the outcome if it had not worked out the way he thought it would.

The other tangent that it came from was from one of my best new friends of mine that made a decision even though it came about in a highly charged atmosphere of being pressured by good friends and even some family members. They made a conscious decision to step up to the plate and come the their own conclusions and live with the results. Having some inside knowledge, this too was another decision that will bear positive friend for a long time to come for them. But, regardless, they were prepared to make up their own mind in spite of some fierce opposition to the contrary and live with those consequences.

They reminded me how wonderful a process this is to observe and see in action. It also reminded me of just how rare it has become too. I firmly believe this is one of the most desirable features you can seek out in business partners and friends.

The take away from all of this is that only when you do the same, are you ever going to have any control over your business and life in general. It is only then that you will be able to reap all of the rewards and get beyond simply ordinary results.

Only by making up your own mind, can you have extraordinary success in any undertaking you become involved with in your life.

I have not seen this point talked about too often and yet it is critical for an Entrepreneur to be successful.

And just a fair warning here… When you take control and truly start making your own decisions, not all of them are going to meet with success. But, very rarely are any of these un-fixable. Learn from the decision and its outcome and make sure you don’t make the same mistake moving forward. These mistakes are a valuable lever that you will have over your competition. They will help guide you forward to make better decisions and you will get better and better at this as you go.

Don’t see your mistakes as a negative. Put a positive connotation on them and use them well. You paid a price to get them, use them for all they are worth. Because those mistakes are really quite valuable and yet the vast majority of people treat them as having no value at all and beat themselves up over them. This is truly an asinine approach. It is like burning 50 pound notes simply because you don’t recognize a legitimate foreign currency.

So, in the end, by being unreasonable and not listening to conventional wisdom, you are going to be miles ahead of your competition. And if you can manage to bring this in your personal life, your life can go from ordinary to extraordinary faster than you ever thought possible. This I know from personal experience.

Go be unreasonable and have a profitable day.

Cheers,
Easy Anderson
